What is tabletop RPG? A beginner’s guide

A tabletop RPG is a story built together. Each player portrays a character while a game master presents the world. Rules help decide what happens when an outcome is uncertain.

The rhythm of play

The game master describes a scene. Players say what their characters do. The group follows the consequences, checks rules when needed and keeps the story moving.

The table can be physical, on voice chat or in a virtual tabletop. Character sheets track abilities and resources.

Where dice fit

Dice add measurable uncertainty. Some systems use a d20 plus a modifier; others count successes across a pool. The chosen system defines what the result means.

The notation 2d6+3 means roll two six-sided dice, add their faces and then add three. The number serves the fiction and the rules.

A digital table is still a table

Dice Core resolves an expression into structured data. Dice View can present that result as 3D dice. The same rule can therefore power a bot, a character sheet and a virtual tabletop.

Pick an approachable system, create characters together and try a few rolls in the playground.
